How to Play

All in good fun!

None of us are very good at carpet bowling despite playing for years, but we do enjoy ourselves.

Goal

Aim for the "jack" ball.

Carpet bowling is played on a 6×30-foot green carpet, using 2 lb. balls that are slightly imperfectly round. Balls are rolled slowly. When they leave the bowler’s hand, they go straight. Then, as they slow, they curve towards the side marked on the ball. The goal is to stop as close as possible to a white “jack” the size of a ping pong ball by aiming towards the jack’s right or left side where it lies at the far end of the carpet.

Teams

Up to four players per side.

Indoor bowls are played in teams of up to four players per side, black balls on one side and brown on the other. Teams are drawn at the start of each meeting, although there tends to be trading around – we’re very informal. If a team has four players, each person bowls twice per end, alternating with the other team. That is, 1A rolls a black ball, followed by 1B rolling brown, then 1A, then 1B, then 2A.

Score

Roll gently for top points.

At the conclusion of each end, the score is determined by the colored ball or balls closest to the jack. Warning: there is a penalty if the jack is knocked off the carpet. Also, you get no extra points for hitting the piano. The key is to roll GENTLY.
